TECHNICAL BELIEF IN OUR COMMUNITY &lt;br /&gt;

One of the technical beliefs among our people is in connection with the moon. In the changing from the old moon to the new moon, bathing is considered bad and causes death. People may think that when the moon is dead or when there is no moon and you take a bath you will trouble down and die instantaneously. They base this belief on the idea that the moon is possessed of life and that during its dying, it takes the spirit of people who pour water on their hands.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Another belief is that illness, be it of whatever kind, is simply caused by either of the two elements, the wind and heat.There are no germs to them because they do not see them. When the sickness causes the patient to be hot or say the patient has fever, they say bad heat enters the body. When the patient does not have fever and is cold, they say the patient was caught by bad wind.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
During the holy week, on Good Friday, people gather leaves of a tree “Alagaw” believing that those are medicinal, valuable because the spirit of Christ passes over those leaves. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
At the time of the Resurrection early in the morning, children are woken up so they will grow fast believing that the coming to life of our Lord gives more life to the children because they rejoice for Him.&lt;br /&gt;

#On the wedding ceremony in the church, the bride and the groom have each a candle on their fronts. The one whose candle is extinguished first is believed to be the first to die. &lt;br /&gt;
#In the ceremony also, the two are supposed to kneel during the whole period and the one who stands first after the ceremony will be dominant over the other.&lt;br /&gt;
#In the dining table, if the member of the household changes his place now and then this person will be &amp;quot;mababauhin&amp;quot; or will always be widowed.&lt;br /&gt;
#Before the two leave the house on the first day of their marriage life the dishes are purposely broken. By any member of the family as a wish for them to have children.&lt;br /&gt;

#When one dreams that all his teeth fell, one of his relatives is dead.&lt;br /&gt;

I have prepared to write these beliefs which are either directly or indirectly connected with natural phenomenon from my own experience of what I have heard and what I have seen.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
One of the most prominent beliefs of the people of my town is that when there is no moon, (“Patay ang buan” in Tagalog), taking bath is absolutely considered dangerous because they believed that you will either be blind, sick, or at worse, die at an instant. However, this case is only true to those who really know that the moon is dead or rather there is no moon.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Most of our people thought that when it rains on all Saint’s Day, there would be a good harvest of the season.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
When there is an eclipse of the moon, the people pay close attention observing it because of their four that some great disaster is most likely to occur.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The extraordinary appearance of planets, for example, a comet— almost all the people are fearful of the coming pestilence, or epidemic. Sometimes, they return praying the whole night for the prevention of the coming pestilence.&lt;br /&gt;

I know of a woman in our town who because of the witch’s power became crazy. Believing that the witch had been in communication with her, the husband beat her body with hot iron thinking that the witch would be the one to be hurt and not his wife. The result was that his wife suffers the pain.&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;br /&gt;
In connection with religion, the people believed that the burning palm  leaves which are blessed during the Holy Week will prevent the disastrous effect of the thunder and lightning, or the lightning and thunder would stop. &lt;br /&gt;

It is a common practice among a few people, especially those devoted to religion to hurt their bodies on Good Friday.  This is done by the people who, during their sickness, promised to hurt their bodies (penitencia) if they get well.  I have seen this practice in our town and saw that they uncover their bodies and their backs are slightly dotted with sharp metals just enough to make them bleed.  Once in a while they lie down on the ground to be whipped by their companions until they arrived to a river where they took baths.  This practice is especially done in the Barrio of Raiñgin to the river of Kapitangan. &lt;br /&gt;

While I was a small child, I was asked by my father to jump up as high as possible on the Resurrection of Christ so that I would grow up strongly and easily.  If one is short and unable to jump up higher, he is held in the chin to be raised higher.&lt;br /&gt;

LOCAL BELIEFS IN MY TOWN, MALOLOS, BULAKAN&lt;br /&gt;

I have prepared to write these beliefs which are either directly or indirectly connected with natural phenomenon from my own experience of what I have heard and what I have seen.&lt;br /&gt;

One of the most prominent beliefs of the people of my town is that when there is no moon, (“Patay ang buan” in Tagalog), taking bath is absolutely considered dangerous because they believed that you will either be blind, sick, or at worse, die at an instant. However, this case is only true to those who really know that the moon is dead or rather there is no moon.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Most of our people thought that when it rains on all Saint’s Day, there would be a good harvest of the season.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
When there is an eclipse of the moon, the people pay close attention observing it because of their four that some great disaster is most likely to occur.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The extraordinary appearance of planets, for example, a comet— almost all the people are fearful of the coming pestilence, or epidemic. Sometimes, they return praying the whole night for the prevention of the coming pestilence.&lt;br /&gt;

In this discussion of the common beliefs and practices in my locality it is advisable to divide  the subject into four divisions. I shall begin in bearing the child.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
A pregnant woman must not sit on the steep of the stairs. If she does, she will have trouble bearing forth her child. This belief is almost universal. Its origin is easily understood. The steep of the stairs common in twons are made of two parallel baboo bars with small spaces between. These small spaces, they say influences the size of the organ of production in the females so that they have to avoid as much as possible this bad habit. A midwife can tell there would be a child; whether a boy or a girl. If the nipples of the mother are round and gray with black spots which they call “binuauaya” the child is a boy.&lt;br /&gt;
 &lt;br /&gt;
If a mother will bear her child at night, the whole neighborhood goes to her aid. In the night, the bad spirits roam around and the people fear that the mother may be the object of the mischief of these imps. They are however afraid of the light. Usually, when a child is to be born at night, torches are lighted up during the whole night under the house. The people going for the midwife must carry torches and make as much noise as possible to frighten away the mischievous spirits.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The midwife or the other hand must and never answer at the first and second call of those who came to conduct her. Many&lt;br /&gt;
time, they say the evil spirit calls upon the midwife to hide her so that when the people who really want her to attend a pregnant woman, she would be securely hidden by the spirits.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
At the third or fourth call, she will look out of her window and ask the name of all the people who come to conduct her to make sure that they are really people. It ought to be remembered that Sianake also speak and appear like people. When she is sure that she is not fooled, she must make them go upstairs and let them chew buyo— each one of them. After this, she can go. At her return home, she is not accompanied. This practice has passed into a proverb— &amp;quot;To be conducted like a midwife&amp;quot; is to be treated well when they want something from you and to be neglected after your service.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The placenta of the child influences the sharpness of the child&#039;s mind. If the placenta is buried as it is, the child will have a dull head. If it is buried in a coconut shell full of newspaper and torn-leaves from books, the child will become a learned man.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
If the placenta is put in a bamboo internode filled with ashes from the store and tied up in an alagan tree, the child will be an eminent thinker. Care must however be taken that this is not discovered by crows and hawks which often scratch it and eat it. In this case, the child will be empty-headed.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
If the older children are always quarreling, the placenta of the late child is dried. When the baby is some two or three months old, the placenta is roasted and eaten with soft boiled rice&lt;br /&gt;
called “silugao”. After this, the children will love each other well. So much for the bearing of the child. There are more points of observance but they are minor ceremonies.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
I shall then tell the belief in death. When one dreams that one of his molars were pulled out by some accident or whether it is broken it is a sign that one of his nearest relatives will die. Among children the moth is an omen. If when children are playing in the day time and a moth happens to fly near a child and hover around him, it is a sign that either his father or mother is dead, especially when they live in some other town. A story was told by my neighbor that when he and his child left his wife, the child’s mother was suffering from no pain. But when they were in the house of his brother whom they were visiting a moth alighted on the child’s hand. At 12 o’clock that day, they received a telegram announcing the death of his wife who fell from the window.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
When one is passing near a house where someone is agonizing, he must enter the house even though he is a stranger. If he continues his way, a big dog will wrestle with him.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
It is a common accident for children to be drowned in the river. When the parents do not know of the whereabouts of their child they can know whether the child is drowned. A candle is placed on a pot and allowed to fleet down with the current. If the place is reached where the children were drowned, the pot will encircle for three times. If the child lies in the bottom, the pot will circle three times and then stop there in spite of the current. &lt;br /&gt;
The next division I shall call social for what of a better name. When a ast washes herself with her saliva and forepawag, it is a sure sign that some from away visitors  will come. To make those visitors bring rice with them so that they will not be too much of a burden on a family, the rice measure in the house is thrown at the oat. When the fire in boiling the rice or fish makes some noise, the cause doubtless of some cases in the wood, it is a sign that visitors will also come. In order to prevent those visitors lodging into the house, the fire is extinguished instantly and the would-be-visitors they believe will find another house for lodging. In eating one sometimes unconsciously bitten the tongue. Sometimes the food goes the wrong way and a violent coughing follows. These are signs that someone, usually a lover, is thinking of a girl. If the one who bitten her tongue or cough is a girl. In this case, in order to assure the lover that she received his remembrance, the girl must stand up and about “Yes” as loud as she can. When she continued to eat and if no more accidents happened to her, the lover received her answer. If a cook crows at an unusual hour of the day, it is a sign that a girl will be disgraced by her lover in the vicinity where the cook crew.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The next division is fetish objects. In this discussion, we shall see how the people here believe in objects having strange power. It will be seen at the first glance that they are idolaters. But this is not true. The idolaters have their supreme power in the idol. It is their All. But in the fetish belief, they describe powers to objects but these powers may be counteracted by human. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The flower of a banana which has not yet opened in a zest of anting-anting. If one goes out in the middle of the night and stands beneath a banana flower beginning to open, he can invoke the spirits living in the flower. With a certain formula, he can call the spirit which falls in the form of a fire. The person must catch it with his mouth and swallow it instantly. After that, he can become invisible and can transport from place to place through the air.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
An egg which is almost to hatch as a source of string spirit. If one desires to perform miracles such as making his enemies sick or become invisible, he must take one of these eggs in the middle of the night from the nest and then go under the house. At eleven o&#039;clock, he must put the egg under his armpit and remain standing. He must continually recite the form of incantation and must not move whatever he feels. At twelve o&#039;clock, the egg will become hotter than a burning iron but the performer must bear it. By and by, the chicken inside the egg will come out and enter the body of the person through his armpit. As soon as the chicken enters the body, it will turn the eyes of the person which are now called manounoulsa, you will find the image of a chicken inside of the image of a man. These people can trouble you by making you sick. They have the second self which binds you. Once a man traveling in the country came to a house where everybody was mourning. He found out that the reason for such out-crying was the death of the master of the house. The corpse was already in the coffin and was to be carried to the grave. But the stranger who was a connoisseur in such matters said that the man was not dead. He said that the body was only bewitched. He ordered a nail and a hammer to be given to him. He bore the nail into the head of the corpse. The dead man came to life again. The stranger then said, “ Count three houses from here and at the last one you will find a dead man.” They did so and found that Pedro, the laborer of the first dead man who had resurrected, was dead. This Pedro was the same man whom the former had kicked out of the house for asking him again and again for money and food.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
When one wants to have a body bullet-proof he must make a wound in his leg and plant in there quicksilver. After this performance, a bullet or knife will not harm him. He can also jump rivers twenty meters wide. The way to kill this kind of a man is to strike the bolo on the earth saying “from the earth didst thou come and unto the earth thou shalt return.” Immediately after saying this, strike him any place in his body but the best place on his chin. In the latter case, he will not agonize but die at once.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Lovers who are spurned by their sweethearts have one recourse. They catch lizards and flies, and mix them in a bottle of coconut oil with ginger. In the preparation of this ingredient they must recite some formula. If it is performed well they put &lt;br /&gt;
this in their cigarette. If the girls smell the smoke, they will be attracted and will go with the lovers even though they do not want to go. There is something in them which seems to push them and they fall in love with their formerly rejected suitors. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The ant-hill is the home of what we call, “matanda sa punso.” In passing near this, one must always ask permission from the ant-hill by saying this “May I be allowed to pass here?” He must set his foot very carefully and he must walk slowly.&lt;br /&gt;

This is because the spirit may be sleeping on the path and if anybody happens to thread upon him, the aggressor will have to pay dearly. Sometimes this fact will be turned toward his back during the rest of his life. Some people who have been punished like this obtained pardon by imploring the mercy of the spirit. This is done by putting some good food on the ant-hill.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
A six months old baby in the womb of the mother. If the baby comes out in the sixth month, it is sometimes stolen. This is crucified on a cross and baptized secretly by the theft with holy water. During the Spanish administration, a short myth was handed down to me by one of my older relatives. Many people believed this short story to be true, but I doubt the sincerity of its originator. The story is as follows:&lt;br /&gt;
      One Sabbath night, while a Spanish curate was going on his way home, he saw a glimpse of two moving figures at alight distance near the bank of a river. As he gradually approached the objects, he finally found out that they were the two dwarfs dancing amidst joy and laughter.&lt;br /&gt;
     &amp;quot;Mr. Curate&amp;quot;, asked the dwarfs, &amp;quot;We are inviting you to dive with us under the water and we will show you the grandeour of the palace of our dwarf king.&amp;quot;&lt;br /&gt;
      &amp;quot;How could I dive in the water without losing my life when I could not stay under it more than a minute?&amp;quot; asked the curate. &lt;br /&gt;
       &amp;quot;Well, we will save and guide you with the utmost care that you will not die,&amp;quot; replied the dwarfs. &lt;br /&gt;
        After a few minutes of hesitation, he reluctantly consented to go with faltering steps. When he reached the palace,the king offered him the best food they had and then showed him the most beautiful places of the palace. He was given the best opportunity to enjoy the companionship of the dwarfs so that he did not even dare to come back to his convent wherein his service was needed by the Catholic people especially. Many years had passed but the curate was never seen to come back to his old home. &lt;br /&gt;
     It was said that many people who had been diving in the same place were trying to discover the secret of the dwarf&#039;s place, but most of them might have either seen the place or died. Those who dived and fortunately came back said that they had seen the door of the palace. &lt;br /&gt;
     It was believed that the curate, have been enchanted by the beauty of the palace, was induced to stay and even married the dwarf princess and now they thought him to be the ruler of the place. It was even said that any one who succeeds in getting in the said place should be possessed of an eternal life. The general belief is that the curate had founded a strong and stable kingdom with himself as a king. &lt;br /&gt;
     This story happened in the town of Baliuag, Bulacan near the bank of the river. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&#039;&#039;&#039;The Mysterious Saint.&#039;&#039;&#039; &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
     In the barrio of Santo Cristo, Malolos, the patron was supposed to be possessed of super-human power that many people from the different sections of the province paid a visit or rather a homage to the chapel. The Saint was considered to be mysterious because of the fact that he suddenly became black and produced smoke through His mouth just immediately after the New Year&#039;s Eve. The people thought he had the power of making himself black and produced smoke, and from this observation, they inferred that he could do whatever he wanted to do. There was a small pond just back of the chapel. It was believed that any sick people could easily be cured if they took a bath in that dirty pond. Wonderful enoughs, most people got well when they bathed in it. &lt;br /&gt;
        There was a woman who happened to be praying that she wished to have a husband so that they could have a child. She was so sincere in her prayer that the next day, a very short fellow began to love her. Thinking that the man was sent by God represented by Santo Cristo, she accepted him even if he appeared undesirable. They were, therefore, married, but unfortunately many years had gone by without raising any child. She again prayed in the same chapel asking the saint to make her a mother to any kind of child he might give her. She, however, succeeded in &lt;br /&gt;
her prayer because the next night she gave birth to a very tiny child, as small as a grain of rice. The mother was so happy that she instantly kissed the child, but unfortunately she inhaled the tiny child through her nose. She therefore, lamented for the loss of her only child. &lt;br /&gt;

Courtship and betrothal of  the old days are different from nowadays. A man could not directly court a lady without the parents consent. When a young man fell in love with a lady, he had to tell his parents and if they liked her, the parents made a visit to her father and mother. It was often a ceremonial call and done mostly during night when every member of the family was at home. They talked about other things before the purpose of their call was touched. The mother of the man passed to the mother of the girl a piece of money. Everything depended upon this. If the gift was accepted, the proposal was then accepted too. The happy lover who had been waiting all this time outside was called in, while the mother of the girl sent for drink and bottles.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The next day, the lover visited the parents of the woman, who called all the other relatives to see him. The man was put under probation for two or three years. During all this time, he had to spend most of his time serving and working in the house of his fiancee as a member of the family. In this period, if something undesirable or unexpected is noticed, he must leave and bid farewell to his hopes. Sometimes if nothing was discovered the father of the girl tried to invent one in order to free him and to be profited by a new wooer. If it happened that the girl loved the boy, they eloped, but if she didn’t like him she felt happy when he was sent away.  The parents sometimes did not ask the opinion  of the girl on the matter. Whether she liked or not the man, she had to obey her mother and father.&lt;br /&gt;
However, if everything went on prosperously with the engagement, the formal betrothal might come in two years, and was a prodigious affair. Before the wedding, all the relatives of both sides are told about  it. Some of them, with the man’s parents, went to the bride’s house and talked about the dowry, the marriage portion and the feasting of there was one. When they came to an agreement, they called the bride and groom and were then finally engaged to be married within a few weeks.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
This has not always been the case. There are some elopements which resulted from the dislike of the girl’s parents to the boy or the boy’s parents to the girl. There were some engagements done secretly and when they could not asked the parents’ consent they eloped and went to the  justice of the peace to be married. A man or woman who was being forced to marry one whom he or she did not like eloped with some other.&lt;br /&gt;
Four weeks before the wedding day, the priest to marry them is informed and every Sunday during mass a man announces the coming wedding. This is done for three weeks (every Sunday) so that if there is any complaint coming up, it can be settled at once. If there are any inconveniences or each party found by  some other persons, they may bring out the problem to be settled.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The couple should have confession and communion before they can be married. This procedure is also observed today.&lt;br /&gt;
The dowries  to the bride might consist of jewels, money or other property.  A woman could not be given to a man as a wife unless her parents saw the dowries.&lt;br /&gt;
In the feast, the mother and father and other relatives of the man were responsible. Relatives of both parties helped.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&#039;&#039;&#039;FIESTAS&#039;&#039;&#039; &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The celebration of fiestas (even in the barrios) are observed with pomp. There is always feasting, with bands of musicians and other  enjoyments are displayed. Masses are held and at night the procession; some kinds of games are played in the afternoon.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&#039;&#039;&#039;BAPTISM&#039;&#039;&#039; &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
In selecting the godfather and godmother, the parents should be careful because the child usually inherited some of their traits.&lt;br /&gt;
The parents may give a feast if they wanted to, but the godfather or godmother must give gifts to the child which should be kept to give good luck of it.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;

In a wedding, the lady who will remove the veil of the bride will be the next to marry. It is also believed that the first lady  to whom the bride gives the orange blossoms will marry next. To make more fun, the bride asks the women to form a crowd and she then throws her bouquets of flowers, and she who gets it is likely to follow. One of the two sisters or brothers who marry in a single year will meet several hardships in life while the other one will be happy and successful. If  you sing while you  cook, you are likely to marry a widow. During the marriage ceremony, the couple are given each a candle, and the one whose candle is consumed easily will die first. If during the wedding ceremony, the wedding ring drops, either the bride or the groom will die soon or if the veil of the bride drops, she will be unhappy in her marriage life.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&#039;&#039;&#039;ABOUT LOVE AFFAIR&#039;&#039;&#039;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
If you want to know your future husband, count nine stars for nine nights and on the ninth night, you will dream of a man who will be your future husband. If you have some courage of doing a more thrilling proof, you have to wake up before 12 o’clock on the night of “All Saints Day” and face your mirror where you will see another face, not yours. If you dream of your sweetheart, turn over your pillow to make her or him dream of you. When you see three priests walking on the street, hold your handkerchief and you will receive a love letter the next day.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&#039;&#039;&#039;ABOUT FORTUNE&#039;&#039;&#039;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Do not start doing anything on the thirteenth of any month (especially August) because that is an unlucky date.&lt;br /&gt;
  	If you leave the house while some people are eating, you may meet misfortune unless the plates are turned around several times.  &lt;br /&gt;
   	You are lucky if in going out of the house, the first person you meet is a boy and unlucky if it is a girl. &lt;br /&gt;
   	Seeing a horseshoe while walking means goodluck.   &lt;br /&gt;
   	When walking and you see a snake crossing the street, good fortune is expected, but if a lizard is seen crossing it, and bad luck may befall you.&lt;br /&gt;
 	 It is not good to pay debts at night because your properties are likely to be gone.&lt;br /&gt;

  &#039;&#039;&#039;“THE ADAM AND EVE OF THE TAGALOGS”&#039;&#039;&#039;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Many hundred of years ago, when Luzon was still inhabited, Bathala, our supreme god, was envious of Loan, the god of the Visayas, because Loan had many subjects while Bathala&#039;s Kingdom was a barren desert. It was within the power of Bathala to create human beings, but not food for them; and so he asked for advice from Diwata, the supreme god of the universe.      &lt;br /&gt;
       	Diwata told Bathala that the next day he would send an angel to earth with seeds to be planted. The promise was fulfilled, and Bathala, scattered the seeds all over Luzon. Within a short time, the island was covered with trees and shrubs, and was then ready for human habitation; accordingly Bathala created Adam and Eve, the ancestors of the Tagalog. In spite of the fact that they were forbidden to eat the green fruit as a certain plant they disobeyed and ate it; so as a punishment, they were poisoned and made very sick. They did not die, however as a result of their experience, they gave the name &amp;quot;Lason&amp;quot; (poison) to this plant. Conscious of their fault, Adam and Eve implored forgiveness of Diwata. By order of Diwata, Bathala forgave the criminals, but the &amp;quot;Lason&amp;quot; still remained poisonous. In order to rid of its dangerous properties, an angel was sent to earth, He put the marks of his finger nails on the surface of the pulp of each Lason-seed, and these marks may be seen to this day. Afterwards the name of the plant was changed from &amp;quot;Lason&amp;quot; to &amp;quot;Lanson&amp;quot;, the name by which it has been known ever since.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&#039;&#039;&#039;HOW LANZONES BECOME EDIBLE&#039;&#039;&#039;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The little town of Puerto, on the Southern and weather shore of Laguna de Bay, produces more &amp;quot;lansones&amp;quot; than any other town in the province. Steamers call daily at her whereas for the fruits which have made her famous. &lt;br /&gt;
In the church of this town may still be seen the image of the mother god, the Virgin&#039;s Mary, lending the child. One evening long time ago, it was discovered that the beautiful image was missing from its accustomed place in the church. The news appeared like wildfire, and all the people were in the great announcement and consternation. While all was confusion in the town, a heavenly sight was being presented in a little places outside the municipality.&lt;br /&gt;
A beautiful woman was dressed in white was walking over the grass with a child in her arms. They were going towards a &amp;quot;Lanson-tree&amp;quot; on the other side of the meadow. The boy who was evidently tired of being carried, asked to be put down. When the child saw the fruits scattered all over the ground, he felt very thirsty, and picking up one of the tempting fruits, began to open it. The mother told her son that the fruit was poisonous; but the child said that he was very thirsty, and could go no farther if he did not have a drink. Then the mother took the fruits from his hands, and with her delicate white fingers pinched the pulp gently. Turning to her son, she said, &amp;quot;Now, you may take this and eat it, you will find it  the most delicious and refreshing of all fruits&amp;quot;. The child obeyed and the Fruit was indeed sweet.&lt;br /&gt;
This is the way by which the &amp;quot;lansones&amp;quot; were transformed from a poisonous, dangerous fruit to a sweet, delicate food. If any one discredits this story, all he needs to do to prove it&#039;s truth is to open up any Lanzon he finds, and he will see without fail the fingerprints of the Virgin.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&#039;&#039;&#039;WHY BATS FEX AT NIGHT&#039;&#039;&#039;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Many years ago the earth was inhabited by only one man. His body was composed of minute organisms that were incessantly worrying against one another. One day, this man became so weak that he could not obtain food for his support. He laid himself down on some soft mows by the bank of the river, and there he remained till night. The organisms that lived in his body began to fight against one another fiercely. Each ate his fellow until he became very big. At last the man died, and only one organism remained alive. This organism then flew away, and became the ancestor of the bats. The light of day so dazzled his eyes that he could not fly very far, so he decided to fly only at night. And ever since, his descendants too, have hidden themselves in the daytime and come out only when it is dark.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&#039;&#039;&#039;THE ORIGIN OF THE MONKEY&#039;&#039;&#039;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
A long time ago the world, which was divided into oath and heaven, was very lonesome for Bathala was the only living being in it. He lived in heaven. One day Bathala felt so lonely, that the thought of creating some living beings for his companions came into his mind. He had never thought of this before, although with his infinite power he could do anything he pleased. So he came down to earth to get some clay; but he found the ground very dry, for there was no such thing as rain on the earth. Immediately he said, &amp;quot;Let there be rain!&amp;quot; and the rain fell down. Then, with a large load of slippery clay, Bathala returned to heaven and began the work of creation. He created man, birds, plants, mountains, and rivers (etc). While he was in the act of creating man, however, an accident occurred. As he was molding a piece of a clay into the shape of a man, the mold slipped from his left hand. Bathala was quick enough to grasp the back of this lifeless mass of clay; but the clay was so soft that it stretched out into a long rope, and the mold fell into a tree. In his anger, Bathala said &amp;quot;I cursed thee. Thou shalt have life, but thou shalt inhabit trees. The part of thy body that has been stretched out into a rope shall become thy will.&amp;quot; The lifeless mold was at once changed into a monkey, the great-grandfather of all the monkeys.&lt;br /&gt;

==&amp;lt;h3&amp;gt;Juan and His Rooster&amp;lt;/h3&amp;gt;==&lt;br /&gt;
Juan was a busy farmer who lived with his lazy, stiff-necked wife. He began work on the farm from dawn to sunset. But when he came home, his wife would neither talk or show him any single sign of love. His clothes which are practically raggy as compared to or in contrast to his wife&#039;s decent clothings for she has many&amp;quot; camisas&amp;quot; and &amp;quot;sayas&amp;quot;. Every day such is the atmosphere of Juan&#039;s cottage. &lt;br /&gt;
But one day, while he is in his poultry yard feeding his foals— for he has fifty hens and one rooster— he heard the conversation of the rooster and the turkey-gobbler who seems to envy the lot of the rooster. &lt;br /&gt;
“Why do you enjoy your life on this farm? You seem to be content and happy,&amp;quot; was the turkey&#039;s question. &lt;br /&gt;
&amp;quot;I am only one rooster here and I am their chief who holds the absolute sway all over them.  None would dare to disobey me,&amp;quot; was the rooster&#039;s reply. &lt;br /&gt;
Struck by the reply of the rooster on the superiority of man over his wife, Juan immediately took his whip, looked for his wife and upon seeing her he whipped her until the wife made her submissive entreaty. From that time on Juan had a happy farm life with the helping hand of his wife. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
==&amp;lt;h3&amp;gt;Juan, the Greedy Boy&amp;lt;/h3&amp;gt;==&lt;br /&gt;
Maria was a bibingkera (seller of bibingka) in a little barrio who had a son called Juan. Everyday Juan was sent to the neighboring barrios to sell bibingkas. For about a month, Juan always came with his empty basket but no money in his pocket. He told his mother the cause of this. He said that his “sukis” were buying the bibingkas on credit. &lt;br /&gt;
But still the mother could not believe his son. So one day she followed Juan and she found out that Juan never went far but hid behind some bamboo thickets where he usually ate the bibingkas. In payment of this foolishness of Juan, he was given a cavan of whip and to plow the field in punishment. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
==&amp;lt;h3&amp;gt;The Tiyanaks&amp;lt;/h3&amp;gt;==&lt;br /&gt;
The tiyanak is a spirit of the underworld. It was formerly the current belief that they are the spirits of childs who die unchristened and of those sinful persons. Those spirits do no harm the people but they play with them in a way they please. According to stories, they appear frequently in dark, solitary places where there are few people. And during nights when the moon is rising with a little shower they are believed to appear even around the homes and others say that this is the most favorable time for their recreation. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
If a person invades the haunts of these black spirits, he surely is at their mercy of being played with. The fishermen and farmers of the remote barrios are often victims of the tiyanacs. Sometimes the farmer catches many fishes and when he reaches home, he finds out that they are only blocks of wood or pebbles. Sometimes they would stop the banca of the fishermen and do lead him astray.  &lt;br /&gt;
Some people believe that one can prevent such whims and jokes of the tiyanaks by making the sign of the cross and reciting the Ave Maria. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
==&amp;lt;h3&amp;gt;Gusting na Vivos&amp;lt;/h3&amp;gt;==&lt;br /&gt;
Gusting (Agustin) was the son of a farmer. He was nicknamed &amp;quot;vivos” because of the fact that he interpreted commands too literally. &lt;br /&gt;
One day, he was asked by his father to clean their yard.  He did what he was told to do and afterwards piled the dirts which he had swept near the cottage. Then the father saw that the dirts were piled very near their cottage, and so he told Gusting not to pile them there again but instead at the nearby bamboo grove or &amp;quot;Meycawayan&amp;quot;. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The other day, Gusting was naked again to clean the yard. After piling the dirt on one side of the yard, he took their cart and put all the wates on it.  Then he harnessed the carabao to the dart and then proceeded on his &lt;br /&gt;
way. For two days Gusting, the card and the carabao were being looked for by his father. But on the third day, Gusting arrived with carabao and the cart. On being naked he had gone, Gusting replied that he had been to Meycawayan ( a  town’s name, which means, near the bamboo). Gusting did this foolishness as a joke to his father. And so as a punishment for it he was given a cavan of whip. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Another of Gusting&#039;s stories is an incident between him and the priest. One Sunday morning, Gusting went to town riding on his carabao. It happened that day was the town fiesta. And while he was passing near the “patio” of the church, a “verso” was fired. On hearing the verse, the carabao ran wild leaving Gusting behind. The carabao entered the church where a mass was being held. Then Gusting followed it there. The priest noticed the commotion and asked the “Mayor” in a silent way to look into the matter. So the “Mayor” did so and found out the trouble Gusting was causing. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
After the mass the priest, who was a cure, scolded the naked Gusting for what he had done. And in punishment he told Gusting to set his feet on any piece of land belonging to the church.  &lt;br /&gt;
The Sunday Gusting was riding on his cart, dream again by his wild carabao. On the floor of his cart were earths dug from their yard. He entered the church on his card and was soon by the “Mayor”, who reported him to the oars after the mass. Then he was called again by the cura, &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Gusting was being asked why he was on his domain again, he replied that the earth on whuch he was stepping does not belong to church but theirs. And there upon the cura laughed and asked Gusting to dine with him.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
==&amp;lt;h3&amp;gt;Saze Gold&amp;lt;/h3&amp;gt;==&lt;br /&gt;
Malolos proper had formerly two churches. The large one was destroyed by fire during the battle between the insurgents and the Americans. And during that period of being ruined, a small church was built which was again demolished after the rebuilding of the ruins of the old— which is how the present Roman Catholic Church, in Malolos proper. &lt;br /&gt;
There was a story current among the old people about these two churches. It is said that under the altar of these two churches, there are golds which do not appear as mine or ingots as we take gold to be, but they existed in the form of animals. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Under the altar of the large one, there was a gold crocodile and gold hen with her gold chickens under the altar of another one. Many old superstitious people of the town said that formerly, they saw the crocodile and the hen appearing in dark nights. This was accepted to be true by ignorant people by the remote barrios, especially farmers. &lt;br /&gt;
But now (the old folks) say that they are no longer there and have sunk deeper underground. Some say that they were carried away by the “Americans.”&lt;br /&gt;
It was formerly the common belief of the barrio people and especially farmers that gold exists in the form of animals and not as mines in the form of ones. But now, they accept tge existence of gold mines and reject the old belief. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
==&amp;lt;h3&amp;gt;Pedro’s Courtship&amp;lt;/h3&amp;gt;==&lt;br /&gt;
Pedro was an old bachelor. He was very eager to find a wife, but he did not know how to court a lady. For one to help in his hardships especially in courting, he had a best friend named Juan. Whenever Pedro wished to make an interview with the lady he loves he had Juan as his assistant who speak for him – in other words Juan is courting by proxy, he courts the lady for Pedro. But in many cases, it was not Pedro who was loved or who won the girl but Juan. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
But at last Pedro won the love of Maria. They agreed that they would elope. On this matter, Pedro asked the advice of Juan, and then later gave him many. One of which is that whenever he feels something hot that falls on his body, he must be sure it was a bullet and somebody must be on the watch, and that he must immediately run away. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The appointed courting came. Pedro waited for Maria under acacia where a lion was resting. When he saw that Maria was coming, he rejoiced very much but unfortunately for him he felt something hot on his back. Upon feeling it, he shouted and ran away leaving Maria. This disappointment of Maria made her change her mind and she rejected &lt;br /&gt;
Pedro. So Pedro lost his hope did not try anymore to court any lady.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
==&amp;lt;h3&amp;gt;Laki, the Man in the Moon&amp;lt;/h3&amp;gt;==&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
One there lived a couple in the mountains. They had a son whose name was Laki. Laki was boy of thirteen who was not ugly nor handsome. But this boy was very ambitous of being handsome and tall at the same time. One day, while Laki was playing with the animals of the forest and the birds, a “duende” (dwarf) appeared before him. The “duende” are believed to have the power of transforming man into any form they wanted. &lt;br /&gt;
Struck by the loveliness of Laki and his kindness to the animals around him, the &amp;quot;duende&amp;quot; asked him what he wanted to be. And Laki replied that he wished to be tall and large and handsome. So the “duende” transformed Laki to the form, the later wished himself to be. Afterwards Laki went to a nearby pond and looked at himself. He was very much surprised at seeing a very handsome boy on the pond – this was his image. When he went home, his parents were surprised at seeing the tall, handsome boy – they could not believe the boy at first but the boy explained the matter. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Years later, the people of the moon happened to need a king. They wanted a king who was tall and handsome. And Laki was seen by the people of the moon, so they asked him to be their king. Laki with sadness accepted the offer.  &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
He left the earth on a charlot of solid gold drawn by four white horses. For many years until at present, Laki is on the moon as the ruler of the people there. And at every half and quarter moon, he shows himself in the form of a profile at the interior arc to the people of the earth.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
==&amp;lt;h3&amp;gt;Sinukuan&amp;lt;/h3&amp;gt;==&lt;br /&gt;
Many old people especially in Central Luzon believe that every mountain had each enchanter or enchantress. Thus, the enchantress of Mt. Arayat is Sinukuan;  of the mountains of San Mateo as the enchanter; of Mt. Makiling. Makiling is the enchantress and of Taal Volcano. Taal as the enchanter. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
But among these enchanters and enchantresses, Sinukuan is signified by the word of the most powerful. It was believed that all animals and plants in the realm of Sinukuan were extraordinarily large. And that she had the power of transforming man to any form she wanted. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
San Mateo came to her one day and paid her a visit. In this visit to San Mateo, his purpose was to court sinukuan. As she did not feel any liking to San Mateo, she made fun of him by changing him into a rooster and led him to San Mateo Mountains where hers ascended his original form. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
But Taal being a handsome enchanter was accepted by Sinukuan and they were married. One day a household conflict took place between the two. Taal went back to his &lt;br /&gt;
Mountains. Taal Volcano was then only a solid volcano. Because of Sinukuan’s fury, she threw large pieces of stone to Taal Volcano. The stone struck the mountain and it was broken into smaller mountains. So that now, the Taal volcano is not a single solid mountain. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
