Dr. Francisco O. Santos (June 3, 1892 - February 19, 1983)

Si Dr. Francisco O. Santos ay isinilang sa Calumpit, Bulacan, noong Hunyo 3, 1892, at anak nila Gng. Maria Alvarez at G. Miguel Okang Santos. Nagtapos ng sekundarya sa Bulacan High School noong 1912 bilang isang balediktoryan. Nag Kolehiyo si Santos sa Unibersidad ng Pilipinas noong 1914 na nagtapos sa batsilyer sa sining at ito ay kumuha rin ng Masteral sa Unibersidad ng Pilipinas noong 1919. Nag aral din si Santos sa Yale University para naman sakaniyang titulo ng doktor sa Biyokimika noong 1922. Bukod sa Yale University, kumuha rin si santos ng iba pang kurso sa Minnesota University, Columbia University, and Cornell University.

Siya ay naging guro o katulong sa matematika noong 1914 hanggang 1917 sa Unibersidad ng Pilipinas. Mula namang 1917 to 1999, siya ay naging propesor sa Yale University. Simula 1999 hanggang 1922 siya ay naging katulong ng propesor ng agrikultura at kimika. Si Santos naman ay naging iugnay propesor noong 1922 to 1926. At naging Iugnay propesor at Punong tagapag turo sa nutrisyon noong 1926 to 1929. At naging propesor ng Kolehiyo sa agrikultura sa Unibersidad ng Pilipinas hanggang ito ay mag retiro noong 1959 at siya ay naging ‘Professor Emeritus’. Si Dr. Francisco O. Santos ay pinangaralan bilang isang National Scientist dahil sakaniyang parte sa Nutrisyon ng Tao at Pang-agrikultura Kimika noong 1983. Siya ay kilala ng mga tao dahil sa kaniyang tulong para maiangat ang nutrisyon ng mga Pilipino lalo na sa mga lugar na mas nangangailangan ng nutrisyon. Si Dr. Santos ang naka diskubre ng anti-beriberi sa isang kamote at ang kahalagahan ng kamote para sa nutrisyon. Isa rin siya sa mga unang tagapagtaguyod ng paghahardin sa bahay, na binanggit ang mga prutas, at gulay bilang mahusay na mapagkukunan ng mga suplementong bitamina.

Kinasal siya noong hulyo 29, 1923, kay Adela Paz De Guzman ng Malolos, Bulacan, at sila ay nagkaroon ng limang anak na sina: Fernando, Celso, Orlando, Ruben, at Adela. Si Dr. Francisco O. Santo ay pumanaw sa edad na 90 noong ika-19 ng Peberero sa taong 1983. Pumanaw ito na may malaking kontribution sa nutrisyon at may malasakit sa mamamayang pilipino.


Born in Calumpit, Bulacan, to Maria Alvarez and Miguel Okang Santos. He graduated as the valedictorian of Bulacan High School Class 1912. After taking up Bachelor of Arts 1914 and Masters in Biochemistry at UP 1919, he was sent to Yale University to pursue his Doctorate in Biochemistry 1922.

Aside from Yale, he also took up other courses at Minnesota University, Columbia University, and Cornell University. He became a Mathematics Assistant in University of the Philippines 1914-17. 1917-19 he was a professor in Yale University. 1919-22 Assistant professor in Agriculture and Chemistry. 1922-26 associate professor. 1926-29 associate professor and head of professor lecturer in nutrition. He became a teacher and administrator in the College of Agriculture at UP for several year until his retirement in 1959 and appointment as Professor Emeritus.

He was posthumously honored as National Scientist in 1983 for his significant contribution in the fields of Human Nutrition and Agricultural Chemistry. He is remembered for his concern and deep concern for improving the nutrition of Filipinos, especially in working and disadvantaged areas. Dr. Santos determined the anti-beriberi content of sweet potatoes and demonstrated the nutritional value of this crop. He was one of the first advocates of home gardening, citing fruits and vegetables as good sources of vitamin supplements. Dr. Santos married Adela Paz De Guzman of Malolos, Bulacan on July 29, 1923. They had five children: Fernando, Celso, Orlando, Ruben, and Adela. At the age of 90, Dr. Francisco O. Santos died.
